Lāhainā: the historic town, rebuilding

Lāhainā carries more history per block than anywhere else on Maui: it was the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom in the early 1800s and one of the great whaling ports of the Pacific after that. Front Street, the harbor, and the great banyan tree by the courthouse made it the island's living room for generations.

The character of the place — and where it stands

In August 2023, a wildfire destroyed much of historic Lāhainā. That fact shapes everything about the town today, and this page won't pretend otherwise. Lāhainā is a community rebuilding — homes, businesses, and gathering places returning piece by piece, on the community's timeline, not a visitor's. Some areas remain closed, and access rules exist out of respect for the people who live there. Check before you go, follow what's posted, and give the town the grace it has earned many times over.

What endures: the harbor, where the ferry still crosses to Lānaʻi; the banyan tree, planted in 1873 and still shading the courthouse square; and a west side that keeps showing up for itself. When Lāhainā businesses reopen and events return, they will be listed here the week they happen — verified at the source, and cheered a little louder than most.

Lāhainā in the Guide

When the first edition launches, this page carries Lāhainā's slice of every week: reopenings in Eat & Drink, events as they're scheduled, and happy hours as they return — each verified at the source. Events are listed only when the organizer publishes them; nothing here is carried over from before the fire on assumption. Join the list to follow the town's comeback week by week.
